See: http://www.reddit.com/r/programming/com ... press_win/

I only skimmed the linked article, but the user's comments are certainly interesting, too.

The Article wrote:One cannot underestimate how important ones installation experience with a piece of software is, because it frames every subsequent experience and impression they have of the product. So while blogging was exploding and people were weighing their options between Movable Type and WordPress, its no wonder why increasingly more and more people chose WordPress, even though it had fewer features, and an inferior design. Fewer people gave up trying to install it.

Nuff said.

An interesting <rant> in the comments ;) code is poetry

Interesting read. Certainly does make you wonder about our installer. I think we are infinitely better than the old installer we inherited from the other app but I still think it suffers from the same problem we tried to sort out in the admin where we hide some of the 'advanced' info by default. Most users like WP because they enter a few details, click a button and bang, you get a message telling you everything is good to go. We make our users think about things they don't need to know about.

Even things like the the 'MySQL tables prefix:' is probably a step too far for most users.

Hmmm, could offer a "show output" checkbox ( unticked by default ) ++ *if* we have ability to write files, create an install.log.txt. That way users could see point of failure on borked installs

Yes, the prefix is really only important if installing more than one instance of QP on the same database, or if that prefix is already in use by another application and conflicts could arise; like Quick Print using qp_ for the table prefixes. I assume the installer checks to see if a prefix is in use?

Another thing I noticed when I recently installed QP is that if the config is wrong and needs changing, it involves stopping and then ftping into the site, or telnet or ssh or whatever to change the flag so that the config can be redone. It would be nice if there was a means to do this easily from the installer. Of course the question is how and keep the security intact; I wonder how many users would keep the installer in place after installing QP?

One point left out as to why did WordPress win is marketing. WordPress managed to get ahead by marketing itself. Even a bad product can gain wide use if marketed properly; not that WordPress is a bad product, I actually looked at it once but it lack of handling multiple blogs from a single install made it a non consideration. Apple is a prime example of using marketing to sell a bad product. Apple will spend enough money to feed the world on a product release and it works; people queue up days in advance for the honour of throwing big wads of cash at some crappy Apple product.

We have already had a comment that the QP site does a poor marketing of QP; I sort of said I would work on that :) .

Oh, also the originator of b2/cafelog came on board WordPress and made the announcement that WordPress was the official successor to b2/cafelog even though it was actually a fork and as such was no more official than any other fork. Another example of marketing.
