Social Media

Postby leeturner » Tue Dec 28, 2010 2:09 pm

As we are hurtling towards our first release like a well tuned, well oiled sports car, it kind of struck me that we are a little social media silent at the moment. I know we don't have many/any real users following us at the moment but we need to be generating some buzz or at the very least talking about about what we are doing and what changes we are making.

I know we have a number of social media accounts set up (facebook, twitter, identica etc) so is one person looking after all those or is there multiple people. Who has the account details for all of those ?

OK, those details work fine for twitter so I assume they will be OK for the other accounts. I am looking at this post for the accounts we have:

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=15&p=89

Wasn't there a load of video hosting accounts that we had as well ?

I am not big on social networking; it all tends to be people spouting sound bites. A public forum is of more interest to those who will be downloading and using QP. We do need to focus on a public form because that is where one goes to ask questions and get answers, not facebook. I will be glad when the day comes that FaceSucks, er, facebook goes the way as those that have come before it.

Any time I download a new application and need answers, I look for the app's forum where I can start searching posts to see if the problem has been answered for me. I find forums to be of immense value for problem solving an application. I would not even bother looking to see if they had a FaceSucks site.

Do you want to get married? :D

At the same time, some users may prefer social media as their method of communication, should we ignore them or fail to educate them? ;)

Facebook isn't going anywhere any time soon and neither is social media in general so we need to have a presence on them. I agree that this forum is where we will be devoting more effort but we can't ignore facebook and twitter etc. The numbers don't lie ;) There is a large percentage of the web users where facebook is their internet.

AOL probably beats them, even my neighbour has AOL :-S

We should try and _encourage_ people to use the forums, but not force them to : if they prefer facebook as method of communication then that's cool.

Even if hell would be a tad parky before I got an FB acount :D

Here is another reason why the whole social networking thing just doesn't make sense. Social networks are for... wait for it.... socialising. In other words, it is for things like, "Hey Bebo, where you been hanging?".

However, I can see people asking for help on why the digi doda is not working for them. That means technical issues get posted all around instead of at the QP forum. Which means that someone will need to be copying questions and answers from the FaceSucks site over to the technical issues section of the forum where we will have better control and better search functions for users to find the information they need.

I can see using tweeter; which is not a social networking site, to send out announcements. Just because FaceSucks exists does not mean an organisation such as Quam Plures needs to be on it. In fact, there are professional social networking sites that would be much more suitable than FaceSucks, and make much more sense.

Ultimately we need to be where are users are going to be and with over 500 million active facebook users I think it is a given that we need a presence on facebook for those users to connect with us.

If the QP twitter account is anything like the evo twitter account then it will be used for more than just announcements. People connect with the evo twitter account when they have problems etc so like you say, there needs to be someone monitoring these and answering questions or pointing them to the docs/forums.

Would you be able to let us know what the other social networking sites are that you think would be more suitable ?

if someone who knows qp is playing in the social arena(s) then there ain't no harm in providing answers there. and maybe pointing folks to the forums for stronger/deeper answers. and maybe bringing stuff back to the forums.

I like phpbb for forum software because I know it. There are others but personally I'd hate to have to learn new tricks just to ask questions about something I wanted to learn about. Same with using QP for our manual: why pick up something that we'd all have to learn just to doc what we're doing? So if potential users out there want to tweet or whatever a question then let 'em. Hopefully someone who knows something can reply in the format they're comfortable asking in.

Not that I know shit from butter about it all. But hey I can't see no need to pick and choose ... other than the software we use for the various things we kinda gotta use something specific for.
